Scene from Even If (Chapter 4)
Her eyes dropped to the floor as she headed toward the door. He hadn’t realized she had been listening to their conversation. He should have said something; an apology maybe, but the words lodged stubbornly in his throat.
Gran lifted a hand, halting Blair’s retreat. Her expression was calm but unyielding. Sweet as sugar when she wanted to be, yes—but once her mind was set, she was immovable. And the way she looked at Blair now? Protective, in a tender way.
“Don’t you let that nincompoop run you off before you’ve even gotten started here. I need some help around the house whether he wants to believe it or not. No one else has come around to help, and I like your style. I think we could both benefit from having the other around.” Blair giggled, and it hit him like a punch in the stomach. Such a sweet sound, her laugh; but Nathan hated her being here.
Gran didn’t miss a beat. “If you don’t mind,” she said, turning to Nathan, “the harvest schedule won’t plan itself. We’ve got a lot to do, so shoo.” She pushed the air towards him, motioning for him to leave. Returning her attention back to Blair, she continued with, “Now, let’s start with these…” She began showing Blair her planner book she uses for planting and harvesting fruits and vegetables, as if Blair’s choice to leave was off the table.
His jaw tightened. He knew better than to argue with her, especially not in front of a guest. Frustration and disbelief twisted his face as he turned and walked away.
